The Buddy Story

Sherman C. “Bud” Jones was born March 31, 1924, just outside Bristow, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and earned a Purple Heart in Pacific action during WWII. Bud’s mother, born Clara Paxton, held a PhD in Mathematics and plotted trajectories for NASA during the Apollo and Gemini programs. Numbers run in the family.

Bud paced off many a pipeline in the oilfields and refineries of 1950’s-era Texas and Oklahoma. By the late 1950’s, he was estimating commercial, industrial, and mechanical insulation projects for A.H. Bennett Company in Denver. In 1961, he founded Amdak Corporation in South Dakota; in 1967 Bud was recruited by Owens-Corning Fiberglass to establish their new Power and Process division, specializing in large mechanical insulation projects.

During this time the essence of The BudWrap Estimator was born. Bud departed Owens-Corning in 1974 to launch his own enterprise, Power Insulation Co. of Minneapolis. For almost 20 years he concentrated strictly on power plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and other major industrial insulation projects. Bud semi-retired around 1991, yet continued to secure contracts for Durango Insulation on power plants in and around Las Vegas and Southern California.

Over his career, Bud bid and was awarded projects ranging from the Alaska Pipeline, to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Sites in North Dakota, to Palo Verde Nuclear, the largest electrical generating facility in the nation. He won contracts in South America, the Far East, and the Middle East. In all cases, he used the BudWrap Estimator.
Bud abhorred “square foot” estimating systems, for industrial or mechanical insulation applications, preferring a more scientific and systematic approach. His estimates were always competitive, and usually successful. Bud said he was NEVER the low bidder – but usually had the lowest EVALUATED proposal. His was always the most comprehensive estimate submitted.

In January, 2002, Bud was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the lining of the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos over his career as an insulator. After a valiant struggle — he never lost his sense of humor — Bud succumbed to the disease on November 16, 2002.
In many ways, The BudWrap Estimator is Bud’s tribute and legacy, the fruit of his lifetime work. Bud lives on, in the code.
Bud emphasized that BudWrap is not his sole creation, but the culmination of many factors and influenced by many people. It is believed that the raw production rates originated with Elmer Gove, Bud’s associate at Owens-Corning. It is likely those rates date back to the old Aber system, an industry standard for decades, now lost to time. Bud further refined those figures, incorporating his own time-and-motion studies, and introduced a unique modifier system to account for variable factors such as type of project, weather, and labor conditions.

The result is uniquely Bud – organized, logical, and user-friendly!!
Rhys Jones, Bud’s son, was born April 11, 1955 in Wichita, Kansas. Rhys’ mother, nee Elizabeth Brown, also held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics.
“I didn’t pick computers– computers picked me!!” claims Rhys.
U.S.M.C. computers recognized one of their own, and Rhys was selected to be a Univac computer operator and COBOL programmer in the U.S. Marine Corps’ recently automated and battlefield-deployable Aviation Supply program, in 1973.

Following a career programming varied business applications, Rhys embarked on a mission to save Bud’s lifelong efforts, then yet a manual system. Twenty-five years and five versions later, the BudWrap Estimator stands unrivaled in the trade.
